If you’ve been diagnosed with diabetes, then you’re at greater risk of developing diabetic eye disease. Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is the most common type of diabetic eye disease. Other types of eye diseases include cataract, glaucoma and transient blurring of vision. The most common cause of vision loss in people with diabetic retinopathy is diabetic macular oedema (DMO) which can happen at any stage of DR. Your risk of developing DMO is closely related to how well you control your diabetes.

This fact sheet covers the most important risk factors for diabetic eye disease as well as questions to ask your eye health professional on topics such as lifestyle, changes in vision plus how often you should be seeing your eye health professional.
