When Vision Plays Tricks: Living with Charles Bonnet Syndrome

Join our first webinar for 2026 exploring Charles Bonnet Syndrome.

People living with vision loss may experience vivid “phantom images” or think they are “hallucinating”, but they are not. This is known as Charles Bonnet Syndrome (CBS), and it is far more common than you might think.

In the webinar, you will learn:

    • An overview of the history of Charles Bonnet Syndrome
    • A clear explanation of what Charles Bonnet Syndrome is and is not
    • An exploration of why the syndrome occurs
    • Prevalence and population impact – Practical approaches to managing and supporting individuals with the syndrome

    About the presenter

Scot Muirden, holds qualifications in Psychology and Social Work from the University of Melbourne. After nearly ten years working within the mental health sector, he transitioned into the field of eye health care, influenced by his family’s lived experience of vision impairment, including his mother and brother, who both have congenital visual conditions. During his time at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital, Scot encountered multiple cases of Charles Bonnet Syndrome (CBS), a condition that was not widely recognised or well understood within the eye health sector at the time. Noting the lack of exposure given to the condition, he established the Charles Bonnet syndrome Foundation in 2012. This became the first organisation dedicated to the syndrome in the world.
