Understanding low vision services

Low vision providers and assessments

If you start to lose vision, you may be referred to low vision services for a low vision assessment. Low vision providers can help people with significant vision loss by providing appropriate vision aids and technology to maintain independence. A low vision assessment may also be necessary before you can claim government financial assistance or benefits.

It’s important to remember that everyone reacts to vision loss differently.

Your low vision assessment will be tailored for your individual circumstances. But low vision providers may be able to help you with things such as mobility, safety, reading, and lighting.

During the assessment, you’ll get advice on on low vision aids, equipment and technology. Some low vision services also provide support through individual counselling and support groups. 

A low vision assessment may include: 

  • testing your current vision
  • discussing the eye disease and its impact on your vision
  • learning techniques to enhance your remaining vision and maximise the use of your other senses
  • talking about the psychological and social impacts of vision loss
  • referral to counselling and group programs
  • information and practical demonstrations on the use of the most appropriate low vision aids and technologies
  • advice on modifications for you home or workplace
  • a visit to your home for advice on living well and safely at home
  • orientation and mobility training to help you get out and about
  • information on whether you’re eligible for subsidies or entitlements.

Low vision assessments are provided by low vision organisations around Australia. Some major hospitals, optometrists and universities also offer low vision assessments.
