Blackmores raises over $1M for Macular Degeneration

Complementary healthcare company, Blackmores, today announced it has contributed over $1.2 million to the Macular Degeneration (MD) Foundation since October 2003.

A percentage of sales from Blackmores Macu-Vision goes towards further research and education and supports macular health initiatives. Blackmores Executive Chairman, Marcus Blackmore AM, commented that Blackmores is delighted that the Foundation continues to undertake a crucial role in education and raising awareness and support for the MD community. “Blackmores Macu-Vision provides nutrients important to the macular region of the eye. Antioxidants zinc and vitamins C and E, play a significant role in protection against free radical damage in the macula, retina and lens of the eye.

Australia’s leading ophthalmologist and a founder of the Foundation, Dr Paul Beaumont, formulated Blackmores Macu-Vision in conjunction with Blackmores research department.

Chief Executive Officer for the Macular Degeneration Foundation, Julie Heraghty, commented that while MD affects the elderly, it can also occur in younger people. “Its’ onset can be sudden and dramatic and it is imperative to inform and educate Australians about eye health and disorders,” said Ms Heraghty.

“Macular Degeneration (MD) is the leading cause of blindness and is silently taking away the sight of Australia’s ageing population.

“The partnership with Blackmores is extremely valuable for the Foundation. The commitment from Blackmores and in particular Marcus Blackmore, has been an integral part of our goals to reduce the incidence and impact of MD in the Australian community.

“The company has a widespread distribution network and a good reputation for quality control.

“Research undertaken by the Foundation with Blackmores’ support has helped identify the main needs of the MD community.

“The Foundation thanks Blackmores for the company’s dedication.”
