The number of people who are blind or have low vision in Australia is set to double to 600,000 by 2020.

One of the main barriers faced by people who are blind or have low vision is having easy access to printed information.

There are now many solutions to minimise these barriers through the use of adaptive technology and appropriate training. These adaptive technologies include computers with speech output, electronic braille terminals and devices for electronically scanning printed material.

Vision Australia centres will open its doors to the public to showcase the latest technology and services for people who are blind or have low vision.

“Latest products and demonstrations from Equipment Solutions and key technology suppliers will be on display – we will have everything from electronic readers and braillers to mobile phones and computer access tools,” said Luisa Ferronato, National Program Manager - Equipment Solutions.

“We will have Vision Australia staff on hand to talk to people about the services we provide. There really is something for everyone!” added Ms Ferronato.
