There is currently a capacity crisis within the South Australian public hospital system for people needing urgent diagnosis and treatment of potentially blinding diseases such as macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy.
Unfortunately, the outpatient department at the new Royal Adelaide Hospital will have less than half the current capacity to treat people with potentially blinding eye conditions, and other suburban hospitals are already incapable of meeting existing demand. This crisis is only going to worsen in future years with the ageing population.
There is a simple and cost effective solution to this critical issue.
