Education

Macular Disease Foundation Australia’s education program provides information about all aspects of macular degeneration: symptoms, risk factors, treatment options, the importance of nutrition and lifestyle and living well with low vision. The Foundation's education team is available to speak to the general public including community groups as well as health care professionals. We can tailor a program to suit a range of needs.

Education for members of the public and community groups

Macular Disease Foundation Australia delivers many education sessions throughout Australia each year, providing an opportunity to learn about macular degeneration. Sessions include a disease overview, symptoms, risk factors, treatment options, the importance of nutrition and lifestyle and living well with low vision. Some sessions may include the important role of  low vision services and aids available to help maintain independence and quality of life.

The Foundation can provide a guest speaker on macular degeneration to community groups including Probus clubs, seniors groups, retirement villages and  vision impaired person support groups.

The Foundation also welcomes requests from Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) communities and can arrange for  an interpreter to assist with the presentation.

All attendees receive a free information pack which includes a magnetised Amsler grid to self-monitor for any sudden changes in vision, information about nutrition and supplements. Some seminars also provide publications on  low vision support services and aids available.

To find the next public education session in your area visit our event calendar.

Education for health care professionals

Macular Disease Foundation Australia provides education on macular diseases and support to health care professionals, delivering presentations at professional development meetings, conferences and congresses throughout the year and supplying free resources.

Education and resources are available to all professionals, including ophthalmologists and optometrists, general practitioners, psychologists, practice managers, general and ophthalmic nurses, orthoptists, pharmacists, care workers,  aged care staff and students.

The Foundation also contributes to professional publications on topics associated with macular disease which may include treatment, research, nutrition and supplements, living with low vision, and the psychological impact of vision loss.

The Foundation recognises the important role that aged care workers play in the support of those with macular disease, most particularly aged-related macular degeneration, and provides ongoing education and support to this sector.
