Shooters have MD in their sights
Driven by a love of their sport and the knowledge that vision impairment would severely limit participation, the Australian International High Power Association (AIHPA) recently presented the Macular Degeneration (MD) Foundation with a cheque at their annual Sydney Cup competition.
AIHPA is a rifle club which competes in high powered sports shooting events both across Australia and internationally. AIHPA President, David Waters, said the MD Foundation was selected as the beneficiary charity because Macular Degeneration is one condition that prevents shooters from competing in their sport.
“In our sport many conditions can be overcome with the use of aids, but without your eye sight it is impossible to continue in this sport.
“Also my mother has MD and I have seen the impact it has had on her life,” said Mr Waters.
AIHPA raised over $3,600 by raffling a prizes donated by many generous organisations. Raffle tickets were sold in clubs across NSW.
The raffle was drawn at AIHPA’s 2009 Sydney Cup event at ANZAC Range. The draw was conducted by MD Foundation CEO Julie Heraghty who offered her sincere appreciation to AIHPA for their efforts.
Ms Heraghty said “The Foundation would like to thank AIHPA for their commitment and generosity. Your support raised valuable funds for the Foundation which enables us to continue our sight-saving work”.
“This is a wonderful example of people pulling together to help us meet our mission of reducing the incidence and impact of MD. There are so many ways people can help and it is pleasing to see that AIHPA recognise the important work we do. Maybe it also helps that David’s mother Janet is a volunteer with the Foundation!
The Foundation also extends their special thanks to the organisations who donated prizes for the raffle. It could not have happened without such generous support!
